Error when importing Alembic from Cinema 4D

Unread postby jensonite » Sun Jul 30, 2017 9:44 am

Hey guys,

I can't seem to get Alembic files generated in C4D to load properly. I've tried several settings in the C4D exporter but they all seem to give me the same error:

Corrupted Wavefront OBJ file detected.

Does anyone else here have trouble with Alembic and C4D?
I'm running C4D R18 and Clarisse 3.5, both on WIN10.

Cheers,

Jens

Hi Jens,

Thanks for the report.

Could you send us your alembic file?

Hi!

I just exported several ones from R16 and they loaded ok. We have R18 at school, so I'll try it as well from there, possibly tomorrow. What I can say is that abc's from R18 loaded OK with 3.0 SP9, I can confirm that now.

Hey guys!

Here's a simple test file I exported from C4D R18. It won't load via import polyfile but it will when I use the reference command. Also, it doesn't seem like creasing / weighting works but I assume the fault here lies with C4D. I can open the alembic with C4D just fine but the creasing is lost as well.
(I did switch it on on export)

Thanks for looking into it!
All the best

Jens

Hey guys,

it seems my reply didn't go through so here it is again. I've attached an alembic file I exported from C4D R18. I only got it to load as a reference, not via the import polyfile command, which gave me the error I first posted about.
The file contains creasing / weighting as well, which doesn't seem to translate but I suspect the fault lies with C4D. Even C4D doesn't recognise the creasing when I import the alembic back into R18. It was exported using the Ogawa method btw.

All the best!

Jens

Hello,

To load an alembic you need to use "file>import>scene" or "file>reference". The polyfile must be used to open .obj and .lwo objects only.
About the creases we support them but only with the OpenSubdiv subdivision, you can choose this one directly on the object ("Subdivision Mode"), or in the preferences. Nevertheless, it does not work with your alembic, maybe the creases are not exported correctly.

Hope this helps,

Thanks

Hi Kevin,

why does polyfile specifically offer alembic as an option then? Seems a little misleading.

Cheers!
