"Hypnagogic City"

This is a 16K Clarisse render, printed at 40 " x 72 " or 100 x 183 cm. Its on exhibition right now in Toronto at Red Head Gallery. Its a surreal future vision of my home town. It started when I downloaded the publicly available sketch-up model of the city. All the modelling was modo, the sculpting all 3Dcoat. Lots of trees from evermotion, xfrog, vizpark.

This was my learning project with Clarisse, and I had a deadline. It was a really close call. The size of the render was a big challenge. I underestimated how long the render would take by a wide margin and had to equip myself with a refurbished 16 core machine in order to get enough buckets to hit the deadline. Bit of an adrenaline rush but it worked out okay in the end :)

The final scene was up to about 400 billion primitives, and Clarisse performed like a champ with about 20 gigabytes of assets. I went with the legacy renderer as I really like the simplicity of the standard shader.

Given that this was my first Clarisse project, I'm sure my scene structure is an inefficient mess. Everything evolved organically and I'm still wrapping my head around the possibilities of the file system.

Almost all of the materials are simple cubic projections. I didn't bother with any UVs except for the trees and a few random things.
Probably 90% of the light is from a few hundred point lights. Some volumetric fog in the background. Some post in photoshop, mostly touching up seams and exaggerating aerial depth with zd masks.

A detail:

Amazing! It would be nice to see a behind the scenes video :) or at least more detail views. Congrats!
