Just testing GeometryAbcFur with hair shader, Clarisse 4.0 SP9, for a upcoming project.
It went very well, until I noticed some random black spots, Nan value, in output images. Since there are no black spots if I switch to disney shader, I wonder if this is an known bug of hair shader? I could not find a pattern of where and when the black spots would happen, If I render just one frame, usually it will be ok, but rendering in sequence, I will almost always get black spots. Is there a workaround beside fixing it in Nuke?

Clarisse 5 SP9b PLE with old hair shader

I did a test at home with Clarisse 5.0 SP9b PLE. There are still some black spots in renderings with old hair shader.
I also submitted a render with new hair fiber shader, and it seems to be fine so far.

Don't use the old shader, it is deprecated. It is best to stick to the new hair fiber.

Thanks a lot
Sadly, the company I work for is not planning to upgrade until sometimes next year, I will be testing it again when it happens.

I'm curious to know which studio you are working for and why they are still using a version that is over 2 years old.

I feel more comfortable to send you a private message if you really want to know. I don't think the company I work for cares about this, but It's just me being extra cautious.

Hey Sam,
I could not find any private message function in this forum.

I guess the reason why we are still using Clarisse 4.0 is because we never had time to fully integrated it into our pipeline. It was brought up while working on a tight schedule, and we only purchased couple licenses because it was a "let's try it out first" kind of thing. We ended up using it in a very painful way, but it worked. Since then, we just kept using this awkward solution knowing someday we will come back and explore the full potential of Clarisse.

Anyway, looking forward to get my Clarisse upgraded. I am pretty sure that it is scheduled some time next year.
