scatterer normals question

Unread postby JanSchubert » Fri Jun 08, 2018 8:04 pm

Hi.

I would like to scatter some geometry onto curves or better fur but i would also like to orient it to the geometry normals where the fur is connected to.
So as an example i have a sphere with long fur imported as an alembic into clarisse.
If i scatter geometry onto the fur and use the "support Normals" then it doesn`t follow the normals of the sphere.
But i would like to have my scattered objects aligned to the sphere.

Is there a way to tell the scatterer to use the sphere normals instead the fur normals to align the object rotation?

What i tried so far is transfering the sphere normals onto the fur as an extra attribute in Houdini.
In clarisse i read the attribute via extract attribute and plug it into the "support Normals" Texture Slot.
But it doesn`t do anything unfortunately :(
Is it important if i transfer vertex point or face normals? Which would be the right one?

Hi!

Is there a way to tell the scatterer to use the sphere normals instead the fur normals to align the object rotation?

Unfortunately, this is not supported.. the "use support normal" is a quick and easy way to align the instances on the support, but in the case of a sphere, you can also control the rotation using the rotation attributes, textured with a few nodes,so they all point to the center of your sphere. I'll setup a little scene to show how you can do this kind of effects. For irregular shapes unfortunately, you need an attribute transfer, so,in this case, the best is to do you scattering in houdini and export the rotation as attributes, like in this tutorial :

Hi Yann,
I would love to see this set-up as I'm trying to scatter on an inside of a displaced cylinder and I would like my scattered objects to stick on the displaced surface but pointing to the imaginary center. In this instance I cannot use Support Normals but I would need to find an alternative.

Hi,

In this project, all the scattered instances are pointing to the locator. It should help ;)
