Workflow fur in Clarisse

Unread postby christophejeudy » Tue Jan 08, 2019 2:55 pm

Hey guys,

I am about to start a school project, a shot of a white tiger walking in a temple.
We're thinking of making fur with either Yeti or Houdini.
What would be the workflow to export the fur with custom width/color parameters and render it in Clarisse?

Any hint or help would be very much appreciated,

Cheers,
Christophe

Hi,
if you simulate the hairs in houdini, export the animated guides from houdini as .abc to Clarisse.
In Clarisse you take the Interpolate Fur node. With the fur material you can shade your fur and with the uitility node "fur support color" you can
apply the tigers stripes to the whole fur.
The more guides you export, the beter you can controll clumping/hair stiling in Clarisse.

Hi,

And if you use Yeti, you can get the yeti plugin for Clarisse and then read .fur caches exported from the yeti maya/max... plugin. That will match the grooming you did in maya/max/....

Cheers ;)

Hey guys, thank you for your advice ! That's really helpful.
My scoolmate is making the fur in Houdini right now.
Now I 'm wondering, if he makes the grooming in Houdini, He'll export the guides in alembic BUT will the alembic contain the clump, length and width parameters ?

Hi
Well not entirely for every hair strand but the guides curves can have parameters which can drive the fur interpolate parameter of clarisse.
So make sure the guides are having enough density to control the groom on more complex areas or split the groom into characteristic parts to control them individually.

Hey guys,
My colleague has been working on the grooming in Houdini.
He has made loads of masks driving different effects on the hair.
Unfortunately I am afraid it will be impossible to recreate the exact same result in Clarisse using the interpolate fur controls.
I have no other choice but to get hair curves or polygons from Houdini to Clarisse.
I know this is not very elegant but It looks like this is my only option.
The problem I'm facing is that I need to color the hair (Tiger Stripes) based on Udim textures.
I would normally use a fur support color but In the case of polygon or curve hair, it won't work.
How would you go about coloring the polygon hair?

Hi,

Try to store UV coordinates of the support of your grooming. I don't know about Houdini but Ornatrix exports 2 UV slots with the curves. The first is UV coordinate of each strand and the second is UV coordinates of the support on which I made the grooming. Then in Clarisse, you just have to use the second UV slot in your map file.

Let me know if it works for you.
