Emitter and emission

Hey guys,

Any news on when the updated emitter material will be available? Would love the optimisation right now.

Also will the optimisation for emission also apply to emission on the Disney principled shader?

Hi Dan,

While it's under active development there are no ETA. We've hit many challenges we need to sort out as making it work efficiently and transparently is very complex to say the least.

Just to make sure there's no misunderstanding: it has nothing to do with an optimized emission material. It's a whole new geometry light sampling pipeline and strategy where, for convenience, the material is just the interface to the lights emission interface. The new sampling strategy is actually performed at the renderer and geometry level. In other packages this is referred as mesh lights but in Clarisse a mesh can be combined, scattered, displaced, have motion blur and be driven with shading layers etc... This makes it very tricky to make it work smoothly and more importantly interactively.

As for the disney material it won't work on it as again it is not meant to be mixed with BxDFs other than pure emission.

Thanks for the information Sam, I was aware it wasnt just optimisation of the material but wanted to keep it short and sweet.

Nope, this is a perfect case of pure R&D. It will be there when it will be ready. And don't expect miracles: it won't be able to MIS emission driven by textures to improve sampling.

hehehe, the thing is that technically everything is possible but after a while it would quickly turn up into PBGI with a prepass and so on. No one wants that anymore. And more importantly it's against Clarisse's credo which is to always be interactive.

Hmm, how about a runner up then....ability to mult color values to portals, each one? Also, ability to change portal shape? :D
