Unable to read Substance's texture maps

Unread postby nadiasantoso » Thu Jun 27, 2019 4:31 am

Hi,

Recently we've decided to move our pipeline into Clarisse. However, we've encountered a problem regarding textures maps, especially maps that were generated by Substance Painter and Designer. We were unable to use it right away. We have to convert them; with Nuke or Affinity; to the same file format (.exr to .exr) which is weird.

This is the result when using the converted file maps.

This is what happens when we tried to assign maps that were generated through Substance Painter. These maps can't be accessed in the preview either.

Hi,

I guess you can't see the grayscale textures. In order to see them, you have to set the Single Channel File Behavior attribute to force luminance in the map files.

Let me know if it solves the issue.

Cheers ;)

Hi Nadia,

Démian is right, technically there is no conversion needed. What you see is a single channel file (which contains not RGB but just luminance)
In Clarisse to be able to see this it needs to be interpreted properly.
This why single channel file behavior is required.

The reason the conversion seems to work is because it copies the one channel all into the rgb channels , basically wasting the efficiency it had originally !
Alternatively you could pack 3 mono channel elements into one (like bump, roughness, a mask) and then pick the channel needed. But this is more a game engine based approach.

Hi,

Thank you for the prompt reply! When I set the SIngle Channel File Behaviour attribute to force luminance, it works like it suppose to.
Just one problem, I can't seem to find this attribute on Streamed map file..

Hey,
yeah streamed textured do not have this property, instead they have to be extracted with the reorder node set r000
This will replace rgba with just r for the first channel ( but it can be any)

Cheers,
Kai
