Please explain what exactly is 'parametric' in textures?

Unread postby atnreg » Tue Feb 25, 2020 10:31 am

Hi!

Can someone please explain what exactly the 'parametric' means in Clarisse textures? The manual only shows one example render image which does not tell much ;)

Using UV MAP U as gradient input mode gives the values 0-1 right? But what the parametric gives?

I have tried to understand it by experimenting but haven't seen much light on this so please help me :)

Thank you!

Hi,

Parametric gives 0 - 1 values as well but per primitives. Take the implicit sphere, there is no UV map on it because of its nature. This sphere is made of just one primitive and parametric UV covers that primitive.

Thank you, once again, dboude, for very fast and clear reply
That text should definitely be added to the manual :)

So parametric is normally needed only with non-UV geometry or for some special cases (can't imagine any but there probably are those anyway).

Dboude rocks!

Hi antti,

This is always an issue when writing a documentation. How far should we go? What's the technical expertise of the reader?

When writing the documentation, we assume the reader to have a deep understanding of the basics of 3D. In the same way we don't explain UV mapping, we don't explain Parametric which as Demian said is the uv coordinate system of a primitive.

Well, I have been doing 3D for almost 20 years and before I saw that term in Clarisse I had never heard of it.

And that is why it is so great that there are people in the forum who are willing to help even for 'obvious' (to some people) things.

We may be the only ones to expose parametric coordinates. It's use is rather limited to single primitive geometries such as spherez, curves etc...
