Outline shader with shading groups

Unread postby seren » Tue Aug 25, 2020 11:24 am

With an alembic referenced in as an alembic bundle (geometry/alembic), I am unable to get Clarisse to shade the boundries between shading groups when enabled in the advanced settings section of the outline. I have tried using override shading colours to try and diagnose the problem, but there is no contribution from the use shading group.
If I reference the alembic as a cache (reference/file) the old way, Clarisse outlines the shading groups automatically with no choice in the matter. I guess they are treated as individual geometries. However you loose all the benefits of the newer way of working with alembics.
What am I doing wrong?

Hi,

By default, the outline filter outlines the boundaries between object AND the edges based on the normals threshold. If you disable the normal threshold, outlines are traced just around the objects. So as a bundle is considered as one object just the silhouette will be traced. If you use alembic reference it will outline every single object inside the reference. If you add shading groups you will see the silhouette + the shading groups traced.

However, if you just want the shading groups boundaries you should set 0% to the silhouette width attribute.

Hope it helps.

Cheers ;)

Then it would seem that the advanced setting/shading group are redundant for alembics, as you cannot use them to see the shading groups within a bundle, and the shading groups are outlined anyway in an alembic reference as each "shading group" is seen as an individual object and given an outline anyway.
Either way advanced setting/shading group has no effect on alembics.

Indeed, different shadings groups are traced if there are on the same object. Two different objects with two different shading groups won't be traced if only the shading group is activated. But if you have one object with two shading group it won't be traced if you disable shading groups.

What do you want to achieve? A snapshot would be welcomed.

I'm just after as much control over the outlines as possible.
It just seemed logical to me that if an alembic bundle is treated as a single object that the shading groups could be used to generate the boundries.

It would be great if this could be implemented with the ability to select which shading groups were taken into account for outlining.

For bundles, under the hood, shading groups having the same name but on different objects are considered as different. You can see their names in the material linker.

I can see that my alembic (bundle) does indeed have different shading groups. But Clarisse will not outline the boundry between them even if activating the advanced settings/shading groups option.
As I say it would be nice to have this implemented, with the option to include/disallow selected shading groups from outlining.
