How to see mattepainting (sky) in reflections of water?

Unread postby NiklasW » Sun Aug 30, 2020 11:24 am

Hi,

I have a sky mattepainting and I want to have it visible in my reflections. I tried first the Background Plate which gives me no reflections (But the colours look fine). Then I just created a polygrid, added the texture (checked unseen by Refrections, Gi, SSS), which gives me the result I want but the texture is super bright and the colours look wrong.

What's the common way to do this?

Thank you in advance!

Your solution is usually what I do in this scenario.

If the colors look wrong, and is super bright, my first thought is that the colorspace is incorrect. Be sure to set it to your desired colorspace on your map file properties.

also, you could always put a colorcorrect node on your texture as well, for fine tune control.

in my case the colorspace was correct, but the distant light, shining on the polygrid, was too bright (and coloured).

But is this method the way to go for reflections?

not sure if it's the 'correct' way to do it, but it's the same method I usually use.
Glad you found the root of the problem you were having though :)

Hi,

Don't use a lightable material for your poly grid which handle the sky. Just use a matte material and uncheck Is Emitter on the poly grid like you unchecked "Unseen by ..."
