Maya camera units in clarisse

Unread postby locksmithanimation » Thu Feb 04, 2021 6:10 pm

Hi All, I found a couple of threads about this from 2 years ago, but no answers.
When we import a maya alembic camera in to clarisse, its film back values are really small. 50 mm comes in as 500um.
Both maya and clarisse are set to cm as distance unit.
As its an alembic I cant change the values on the filmback.
Really, the problem is the DOF settings. The values are not intuitive.
If I change the clarisse units to Meters the camera values are all correct, but now, the imported geometry is the wrong scale.
What are we missing?
thanks

Feeling like we need to write script to create a clarisse camera out of the alembic camera coming from Maya. FYI....The only way to get DOF with theses units is to set F Stop very small, but the UI has this limited to 1 or greater on the referenced Alembic Camera

Hi,

Since Alembic is unit agnostic, if you put 1cm the value will be only one 1 in the alembic file.
In Maya the focal length doesn't convert the standard mm for this attribute into the current unit in the scene. If you export a 50 mm lens is going to export only 50 in the abc file.
When you import it :
- Maya : it 's fine since it's doesn't consider the focal length as a distance but just as an attribute
- Clarisse is going to read 50 and apply centimeter to it , since the focal length is considered as a distance.

For example in Houdini you can select the focal units and it's going to do the proper conversion in software unit before exporting. And you have no problem during the import in Clarisse.

YES, In your case you need to create a script to convert the focal length coming from Maya in the proper scale in Clarisse.

Cheers
