hey, do you mean a stepping effect when you say weird? I'm getting something similar, don't know if its a bug, will have to try a bit more.
The first images where done with the legacy raytracer and I honestly don't remember all the details. I've been wanting to do an earth tutorial for a while but here are some tips in the meantime:
- use the "distance to object" with a locator and a gradient. that way you can map the density to a box volume
-volume effects look nicer but take longer to render, 3d layers and "fakign it comp" works best for speed
-if you want more realism, try multiple volumes. one for mie scattering , one for rayleigh. they have different values
-you can get nice clouds using "volume from surface", using a dispalced mesh as the surface (this is one of the cools things I want to do the tutorial about)
