Confused about how clip maps work in the material linker

Unread postby Ken_M » Sun Jun 03, 2018 3:22 am

Hi,
I've had the opportunity to try out Clarisse a few times. It's an amazing program, and I love how I can make heavy scenes that would otherwise crash every other 3D program.
I have some tree models from various sources. Many of them use a cards for the leaves/foliage. When I bring them into clarisse they are the leaf texture surrounded by a black box.
I've studied several clarisse tutorials that demonstrate using the clip map... however when I try to apply the leaf alpha that comes with the tree as a 'clip map' the leaves just entirely disappear.
I've had some success using fractal noise as a 'clip map' because that seems to cut the leaf out, so I know it should work in theory... but so far I'm unable to get the leaves to appear on their own without the black box around them or without disappearing.

I tried lesson 01 from the island tutorial on youtube, but I found that particular part very confusing.

Thanks for the help!

EDIT: Thank you, everyone for your help. I think I've got it working in some cases. The models from speedtree I seem to have the easiest time importing into clarisse.

when it comes to leaves or some other vegetation I usually disable mipmapping for the clip map. Not sure why but mip mapping butchers the texture causing things like no shadows, not enough detail or even no leaves at all. Try doing that

Hi,

If your map is encoded with just one channel (grey) you have to set force luminance on the Single Channel File Behavior attribute of your texture map file node.

Cheers ;)

@dboude

what if one is using streamed map files? There is no such option available

Plug your stream map file in a reorder node and set the reorder to rrrr.

Cheers !
