Beginner Questions

Unread postby Telika » Sat Feb 09, 2019 12:22 pm

Hi !

First time posting here and experiencing Clarisse !
Wich is amazing so far !
So sorry for nooby questions.

1) When I use a Standard shader instead of a Disney Principled, I can change it form dielectric to metallic, but where can I imput a map that drives this parameter ? To use with a substance painter workflow for example.

2) When I plug a normal map, into a normal input, I do not understand why do I have to put manually a Texture Normal Map to see something. Isn't there a way that clarisse understand that it has to create this node, as if it's a input that is specific to normal maps ?

3) Even tough, this texture normal map is working fine, I'm just disturbed by the look it displays in the texture view ? it's Pinky af, is there something I did wrong or is it normal ?

Thanks a lots for your time and replying to these nooby questions :-)

Hi Cedric and welcome to the Clarisse community !

1) The standart shader is an implementation of the AlShader from Anders Langlands, famous for having a lot of features build in one shader.
However it does not support the mapping of the dielectric/metalness.
In painter simply export with the Arnold 4 setup, which will output a 1/IOR texture , which is then plugged into the IOR channel of the shader.
https://www.isotropix.com/learn/tutoria ... e-workflow will explain the proper workflow.

The Disney principal shader goes a different path and can be mapped, but solves the IOR on its own.

2) Well the input can be either a normal or a bump map, and from the input as a texture, Clarisse has no idea in what way you want to use it.
In theory it could check if the input is RGB or mono, but such a check takes extra time and is not always reliable.
There could be a checkbox to declare a texture a normalmap.. or a combined normal/bump node to plug into .. Such things can be requested in the feature tracker https://www.isotropix.com/user/feature-new

So there are potential other options to deal with this in a different way, but not necessarily in a better.

3) Normal maps are usually in [128,128, 255] which is some sort of violet color, not really pink. However there are different types of normals maps.
You could check if the map is interpreted as raw or linear.
And lastly, the texture view itself can have a view LUT which may shift colors so make sure it set correctly.

Have fun with Clarisse
Cheers

Thank's a lot for your reply !

It's usefull to know about the Arnold 4 export !

For the normal map, never mind, it was just a bit frustrating at first but I scripted something so it build everything directly from substance export, I don't have to deal with it anymore :-)

I have another question, I'm trying to make something similar to Maya Image Plan in a camera, I'd like to have the rush I'm working with visible in my camera.
For now I tried to create a Plane facing the camera and a matte shader projecting the footage on it through the camera, but it doesn't work very well :-(
Is there something that allows to do that ?

Thx a lot

Hey,

You could simply create new 3d layer with your background in there.

Here is a more updated and complete Substance > Clarisse Video:
https://www.isotropix.com/learn/tutoria ... o-clarisse

And here is a thread about a script to make this even more plug and play.

And another video where we are showing the connection using the new Disney Principled Shader:

You can also use my script for importing textures that come from Substance:

Example with UDIMs:
https://vimeo.com/315088494

You can download it from Github:
https://github.com/aydinyanik/clarisse_survival_kit

It may not work on the PLE though, because Python is limited in the PLE.
