Houdini\Clarisse normals

Unread postby golubevcg » Sun Sep 16, 2018 8:47 pm

Question about scattering needles\leaves over the trees.

i have a question. Having a problem with orientation of needles along the branches of pines.
i create trees inside of houdini, then i export trees as .abc
and then goes a problem, i expect needles to orient along normals of geometry in .abc geo
(i make custom normals in houdini, wich have proper orientation),
but it don't, it look like clarisse recompute normals during the loading process.
how to fix this?

screenshot included, left - neddles scattered in clarisse(with 100% use support normals)
right - normals in houdini of the same geometry

maybe i'm missing something or doing wrong?

Hi,

Make sure you have exported the vertex normal. It seems to be not well exported.
When using support normal of the scatterer at 100% it should follow the vertex normal you set on your mesh.

I don't know Houdini but when exporting in Alembic format from Maya with Normal, a Normal property is created ("N") as you can see in the property editor. (right cylinder : no normals, so normals are computed by Clarisse /// left cylinder : normals were exported)
