Would Clarisse benefit from Quadro?

Unread postby panupat » Fri Jan 11, 2019 7:04 am

I understand that Clarisse is mainly utilize CPU, however, for viewport performance, would Clarisse benefit from higher GPU memory Quadro offers? I'm curious because GTX cards only go as high as 8Gb.

Hi,

No, Clarisse wouldn't benefit from a Quadro. A 50$ card with 2 Go RAM is enough except for the denoiser which can fill the RAM depending on the resolution of the image you want to denoise. The denoiser is the only exception and takes only RAM on the GC, the GPU velocity doesn't really matter.

However, Clarisse will use more and more GPU in the future...

Cheers ;)

Hi
Not currently, as clarisse 3.6 utilizes no gpu specific feature that would benefit.
However future versions may utilize the gpu in the viewport to accelerate it for a clean playblast or fast preview.

Overall quadro cards are more likely to help with old opengl viewport like Maya when showing many things like textures, fur and lights.

Other than that they prove to be far too expensive , but thats my personal experience :)

Cheers
Kai

Seems, you've been seeing some of our GPU R&D work we didn't really advertised. A precision though, WE NEVER mentioned a release date nor that it will be released in 4.0. GPU acceleration in Clarisse will be released when it will be ready.

Hey Sam,
I missed the fact that my claim is having an absolute expression, sorry for the confusion.
My information is basically from here and assumed it would be part of the 4.0 cycle viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3926
I should stop answering forum posts while on the transit train, did adjust my original claim.

Cheers
Kai

PS:
I heard you release 4.0 tomorrow yes ? :D just kidding ..

Told you, he knows everything XD   8-)
All joking aside - somehow I did see a preview of GPU accelerated viewport and playblast. Don't remember where - might have been FMX, might have been my dreams, doesn't matter. But I did see it, so that makes it at least 2 dudes :p

Dude check the link ..it's your claiming that by the way ;)

The way they described it - GPU accelerated viewport is not going to replace current viewport, it's going to accelerate it. So, for example, if you have some big ass scene and your GPU craps out it's going to fall back to CPU viewport, just like it we have now. There won't be any delay or lags. It looked awesome and I highly believe it will make Clarisse a lot smoother. Just please - make it work on any GPU :D

Thank you everyone. Surprised to learn that view port performance isn't relying on GPU. Planning to build a new PC and in this case I suppose I can transfer my 1060 to my new box.

Oh, yea, I guess that the guilty party was me, but I never said it would be released as a part of 4.0 :D

Yes, that's the first thing most people are shocked about. Clarisse is constantly rendering everything, even wireframes, that's why it does not rely on the GPU.
